What functionalities offer a good ECR system for petrol stations?
In addition to standard features such as the sale of fuel and other goods must contain a modern ECR system mainly various functions to support sales. The traditional way of keeping loyal customers such as fleet cards are already on the edge of exhaustion. Further development of sales increase is the support of ordinary retail customers.
These are mainly varying levels of loyalty systems, as well as acceptance of various prepaid cards, mobile payment&loyalty, supporting various competitions, happy hours, flexible changes in fuel prices and so on. In this respect, it is very important to use data mining and real use of big data, that these modern ECR systems will increasingly provide. Modern ECR system, all of these functions should not only include, but should also to control and prevent their misuse by cashier. Another important ECR feature should be advanced data protection, both against the effects of technical failures or attacks from outside.
Why does installing a washer liquid dispenser benefit both the petrol station owner and customers?
It's a beneficial for both sides for several reasons: no manipulation with plastic canisters and the second reason is the lower price for the petrol station when purchasing large quantities at one time in the tank. Also the better manipulation for the customer – filling by nozzle is more comfortable.
But the big question is whether it is advantageous also for manufacturers. In the Czech Republic we are experiencing situations in which manufacturers this method of sales are often “boycotting” because it is more profitable for them to sell a washer liquid in canisters and this way for much higher price!
What vulnerabilities should one take into account planning safety of data at petrol stations? How to secure your data when server fails?
The data safety problem in advanced systems has three aspects:
1. Physical data safety at petrol station;
2. Safety of both data and infrastructure for a network of petrol stations;
3. Level of security against attacks from the outside.
In the simplest case of isolated systems may be server failure ensured, for example, through a stand-by mode, when the POS can work without a server for a limited time until the fault of local server will be fixed. In the network of petrol stations where all data are typically backed up centrally the problem is stability and security of the entire infrastructure. Especially dangerous is to rely in this case on the cloud solutions. It is recently very “fashionable”, but rather a shortsighted solution. 100% cloud is highly dependent on the transmission network, which is always a risk factor. The optimal solution is a hybrid cloud, where all the important data are stored on both sides - in the local and central system.
